Stradbroke's Past - Families - BOAST

ceremonyMost people who have lived in the village for a while will remember Bertie BOAST who was a pillar of the local community from his early days and his involvement in many of the sports teams to his later years and his record breaking 37 years as a Parish Councillor.

Bertie died in 2001 and a tree was planted in the churchyard in remembrance. A photograph of the ceremony is shown.

boast at doggettsThe BOAST family have been born and have lived in Stradbroke for generations. The earliest photograph was taken in the 1890s at Doggetts a (then) group of cottages in the fields to the north of New Street. Given the ages of the BOAST family in the 1891 census it is likely that the people pictured are visiting relatives, although we believe George and Elizabeth BOAST are seated in the centre. Georeg and Elizabeth were at Doggetts in the 1871 census and given the ages of the children then it is probable that some of them are now the "grown up" BOASTs visiting Doggetts in the 1890s.

The 1871 census the BOASTs living at Doggetts were

Dwelling 1 - John BOAST aged 38 his wife Mary A 35 and children Rachel 8, William 6, Reuben 3, and Ellen 10 mths.
Dwelling 2 - George Boast Jnr aged 35 his wife Elizabeth 32 and children Harry 14, Mary A 11, Charles 10, Edgar 8, Louisa 6, George 4, Arthur 3 and Frederick 9 mths
Dwelling 3 - George BOAST aged 74 Agric Lab
There was a fourth dwelling in which the Andrews family lived - all very crowded for what is today a single family home

(census ref RG10/1739 page 10)

The 1891 census shows that living at Doggetts were George BOAST aged 55 Agr Lab, Elizabeth his wife 52, and their children Frank,17 Agr Lab - Stephen 15 Nurseryman's Asst - Elizabeth Hannah 12 Mother's Help - Herbert 10 Scholar and Clara 8 Scholar.
